FDM printing for prototypes and practical parts

FDM printing builds a part from filament, layer by layer. It is an option for prototypes and practical shapes when the material, design and finish suit the job.

What will the surface look like?

Layer lines are a normal part of FDM printing. Their appearance depends on the shape and print settings. Curves, sloping faces and areas that need support during printing can have different finishes.

Tell us which faces will be on show and which surfaces need to fit against another part. This helps when deciding which way up to print the model.

Tell us how the part needs to work

Small holes, thin sections, overhangs and parts that fit together need particular attention. Mark the important dimensions and explain how you plan to check the fit.

The direction of the layers can affect how a part handles force. Tell us where the part will be used and what it needs to hold, support or move against.

Choose the material for the job

PLA, PETG and flexible filaments have different properties. Our material guide explains the main families; confirm the available grade, colour and print options for your order.

If fine surface detail is your main priority, it is also worth looking at resin printing. The model and its use will help decide which process fits.
